Highcroft Alpacas - Breeding Quality Alpacas in Central Otago, New Zealand

Highcroft Alpacas

Highcroft Alpacas is owned and operated by Cate and Murray Basingthwaighte. We moved to New Zealand from England in 1998 and purchased our first alpacas in 2000. Despite this being our first experience of alpacas we had already had extensive stock experience covering a wide range of animal species, so were well placed to appreciate the low maintenance qualities of the alpaca!

From a small start of just four females, our herd has rapidly expanded and we now run over 50 quality alpacas on our small farm just outside Tapawera township. We are both committed to the alpaca industry. Cate was a fully qualified New Zealand alpaca judge and both of us are active members of the Alpaca Association of New Zealand, including working with the Breed Development Subcommittee and other committees where required.

We are striving to breed for the best conformation and fleece characteristics possible, while still maintaining the robust constitution of the alpaca, through the use of quality sires and dams. While we recognize the value of white and light fawn alpaca for long term commerciality, we are pleased to say we consider that “a good alpaca is never a bad colour!” and this is reflected in the choice of colours we have represented on our farm.

We are proud to have standing at stud a wide range of machos to choose from, including our outstanding male Pentland Sundancer. Sundancer is an exceptionally well bred male from quality lines and displays all the characteristics that are important in fleece excellence; characteristics that he is consistently passing on to his cria.
